Vacuum packaging seals out air, effectively preserving the state of the rice at the time of packaging. Whether new or old, once vacuum-sealed, the color and smell of the rice become difficult to discern before opening. Unscrupulous sellers might exploit this by packaging old or low-quality rice under vacuum to pass it off as new. Consumers cannot effectively judge the quality based on appearance alone, often only discovering after opening that the grains lack luster or have a stale odor-by which time it's too late, harming consumer rights.

Solutions:

 

  1. Strengthen Traceability and Labeling Transparency: Manufacturers should clearly mark the "production date" and, crucially, the "harvest year" of the paddy on the packaging, not just the packaging date. Additionally, actively adopt traceability technologies like QR codes, allowing consumers to access detailed information such as the origin of the grain and processing time, thereby building brand trust.
  2. Consumer Education: Educate consumers on common knowledge: when buying vacuum-packed rice, they should choose reputable major brands. After opening, they can preliminarily assess the freshness by looking to see if the grains are plump and glossy and smelling for a natural fragrant aroma rather than musty or oily odors.

Traditional vacuum packaging bags are often made from multi-layer composite plastics, which are difficult to recycle and degrade, contributing significantly to white pollution from an environmental perspective. Furthermore, although food-grade plastics meet safety standards, if stored in inappropriate conditions (e.g., high temperatures, direct sunlight), potential risks remain and can spark consumer health concerns about the migration of plastic components into the rice.

Solutions:

 

  1. Research and Adoption of Biodegradable Materials: The industry should actively research and pilot the use of environmentally friendly, biodegradable materials (such as PLA - Polylactic Acid) for vacuum packaging. Although currently more costly, this is an inevitable future trend that can greatly reduce environmental pressure.
  2. Clear Storage Guidance and Ensured Material Safety: Manufacturers must clearly mark warnings on packaging such as "Avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature storage." Simultaneously, they should strictly select packaging materials that comply with national food safety standards and provide relevant safety certification information to give consumers peace of mind.
