Vacuum packaging, also known as reduced-pressure packaging, is a packaging technology that extracts air from packaging containers and seals them to create an oxygen-deficient environment for product quality preservation. Originating in the 1940s, it developed rapidly after polyester and polyethylene films were applied in packaging. Its core value lies in isolating external contamination and extending product shelf life. Today, it has expanded from the food industry to pharmaceuticals, electronics, daily necessities and other fields, becoming an indispensable technical support in modern industrial production and daily life.

The preservation principle of vacuum packaging is simple and efficient. By extracting air to reduce oxygen concentration, it can not only inhibit the growth and reproduction of aerobic microorganisms such as molds and yeasts, thereby reducing the risk of food spoilage from the source, but also delay chemical reactions like lipid rancidity and pigment oxidation, preserving the original flavor, color and nutritional components of products. However, it should be noted that fresh food such as fruits, which still undergo respiration, are prone to physiological diseases under high oxygen deficiency, so vacuum packaging is rarely used for them.

In terms of application scenarios, vacuum packaging presents diversified characteristics. The food industry is its core application area-products such as cured meat, sauced beef, pickles and prepared dishes can have their shelf life extended to 2–3 times that of traditional packaging through vacuum packaging. In the pharmaceutical field, it is used for packaging drugs and vaccines to prevent oxidative degradation of ingredients. In the electronics industry, it protects precision components by virtue of its moisture-proof and rust-proof properties. In household scenarios, small vacuum packaging machines can also compress clothes and quilts to save storage space.

At present, China's vacuum packaging industry is upgrading towards intelligence and green development. Automated production lines have improved production efficiency; the R&D of biodegradable packaging materials has alleviated environmental pressure; and the application of intelligent sensors enables real-time monitoring of product freshness. With the upgrading of consumption and improvement of cold chain logistics, this technology will continue to empower more industries, providing solid guarantee for product safety and quality improvement.
